Mycorrhizas in Natural and Agricultural Systems
Dr. Nancy Collins Johnson is a Regents’ Professor at Northern Arizona University, USA. Johnson and her students study mycorrhizal interactions in natural and human managed ecosystems throughout the world. These studies are important because mycorrhizas influence plant productivity, soil nutrient retention and erosion potential. Organic farmers may benefit from managing mycorrhizas as natural fertilizers, but this goal can only be achieved with a better understanding of the factors controlling mycorrhizal function.
Mycorrhizas in Natural and Agricultural Systems will combine lectures with seminar-style discussions, field and laboratory work to explore:
1. Mycorrhizal symbioses in managed compared to natural ecosystems.
2. How management practices influence the community composition and symbiotic function of mycorrhizal fungi.
3. Hypotheses about the factors that control the structure and functioning of mycorrhizal symbioses.
